Temporal Artery Biopsy

Information to be provided on the e-referral for Temporal Artery Biopsy

History

  • Age > 50 years
  • New onset headache
  • Scalp tenderness
  • Jaw / tongue claudication
  • Visual symptoms: amaurosis fugax, diplopia, visual loss
  • Constitutional symptoms: fevers, night sweats, weight loss*
    • * excluded infection and malignancy
  • Previous polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR)

 

Examination

  • Temporal Artery
    • Tender to palpation
    • Absent pulsations
    • Thickened or beaded temporal arteries
    • Other clinical features
  • Date of ESR or CRP (within last 7 days and prior to prednisone dose escalation)
  • List all medical cormorbidities
  • List all current medications, in particular blood thinners
  • Prednisone - Date initiated and current dose.
  • Verbal consent for referral to the temporal artery biopsy service

 

Please give the patient a print-out of the Patient Information Sheet.
