Partners in Care co-design programme

Using patient and staff experience to co-design better healthcare services is the goal of the Partners in Care programme.

We will be running the seven-month Health Quality & Safety Commission (HQSC) programme over 2017/18, beginning in September, and we are seeking staff to take part.

Partners in Care is about identifying opportunities to improve services, moving this to a project phase and having patients and their feedback as an integral part of that process.

Patients have a unique viewpoint and can provide valuable input on how services can be improved, where priorities should be set, and where quality issues have arisen in the delivery of health services.

What is Partners in Care and how can you take part?

  • The seven-month programme begins on Tuesday 12 September, 2017.
  • The programme is based on the Experience Based Design approach (EBD), developed by the National Health Service in England and uses patient and staff experience to design better healthcare services.
  • Ko Awatea's Director of Innovation, Dr Lynne Maher facilitates the programme and this opportunity is all about teaching staff and patients the skills needed to successfully undertake co-design projects.
  • The DHB will put forward three or four teams, consisting two or three staff and two patients in each team.
  • Participating teams take part in two full-day masterclasses (onsite) and seven one-hour WebEx sessions. As well as WebEx tutorials, support from the facilitator and work book evaluation is part of the HQSC package.
  • Teams carry out a co-design project within the DHB and complete a 500-word case study. It is recommended that projects be related to one of the organisation's strategic goals.
  • The DHB is responsible for negotiating time for their staff to participate in the programme and complete projects (a minimum of two hours per week).
