Haematuria

Macroscopic Haematuria:

  1. Continuous haematuria with clots or clot retention:
    • Phone Urology registrar for acute assessment.

  2. Haematuria without clots or clot retention:
    • Do a MSU to exclude infection. Haematuria associated with infection does not require referral.
    • Order a Renal Tract USS.


Microscopic Haematuria:

  • Defined as 25 red blood cells/high powered field on 2 separate occasions by manual microscopy. Note that haemoglobin pigments are not a concern and do not need referral.
  • Do a MSU to exclude infection. Haematuria with infection does not require referral.
  • Order a Renal Tract USS.
  • Check creatinine.
  • If significant proteinuria and casts, consider Renal Medicine referral.
