Chlamydia Pathway - Negative test result

Consider the following differential diagnoses.

Females:

  • causes of abdominal pain:
    • urinary tract infection (UTI)
    • ectopic pregnancy
    • acute appendicitis
    • endometriosis
    • complications of an ovarian cyst, eg torsion or rupture
    • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
    • functional pain, eg ovulation pain, dysmenorrhoea
  • causes of altered vaginal discharge:
    • infective non-sexually transmitted:
      • bacterial vaginosis
      • candida
    • infective sexually transmitted:
      • Neisseria gonorrhoeae
      • Trichomonas vaginalis
      • Herpes simplex virus (HSV)
    • non-infective:
      • foreign bodies, eg retained tampons, condoms
      • cervical polyps and ectopy
      • genital tract malignancy
      • fistulae
      • allergic reactions

Males:

  • urethritis,trichmonar vag, myoplasma gen, HSV
  • physiological discharge – small amounts of clear or mucoid discharge upon sexual excitement
  • balanitis
  • acute prostatitis
  • urinary tract infection (UTI) – cystitis, orchitis, or epididymitis.
