Chlamydia Pathway - Follow-up

Follow-up 2 weeks by phone or face to face post-treatment:

  • repeat information about safer sexual practices
  • ensure compliance with treatment
  • ensure abstinence from sexual intercourse until partner(s) complete(s) antibiotics
  • re-treat non-compliant and/or re-exposed patients
  • follow-up on partner notification
NB: Follow-up may be appropriate by telephone.

Repeat testing is recommended in:

  • all patients under age 25 years:
    • test approximately 3 months after treatment
  • all pregnant women:
    • test 6 weeks after original test date, or 3 weeks after the end of the 14 day course of erythromycin
  • cases where non-compliance with treatment is suspected from the patient or partner:
    • test 6 weeks after original test date, or 3 weeks after the end of the 14 day course of erythromycin
  • repeat testing should not be done within 6 weeks of treatment with azithromycin, or 5 weeks after giving doxycycline as there isĀ the possibility of detecting non-viable organisms.
