TIA Pathway - Madatory triage questions

Eight out of 10 strokes that follow a TIA can be prevented by treating TIA as a medical emergency and following evidence-based guidelines. SOME PATIENTS HAVE AN 8-12% RISK OF STROKE IN THE NEXT 2-7 DAYS.

Assess Risk:

  1. Is the ABCD2 score 4 or more?
  2. Is the patient in AF?
  3. Has the patient had more than one TIA in the last week?
  4. Is the patient anti-coagulated?

If YES to any of these questions treat as high risk.

**This pathway recognises that some patients present late. If a patient has had a single TIA, is not anti-coagulated, and presents after 2 weeks or more, they can be managed as an out patient.
