Type 2 Pathway - Retinal Screening

Any patient presenting with sudden loss of vision must be referred urgently to the ophthalmologist on-call

All patients with type 2 diabetes should be referred for retinal screening from diagnosis.

As well as normal referral information including medication history and co-morbidities, referrals must contain ethnicity data.

Where no diabetic eye disease is found people with type 2 diabetes will be recalled for screening every two years. Where disease is found earlier recall +/- treatment will be organised.
