Diabetes

Type 2 Pathway - CVD Risk

5 year cardiovascular risk assessment should be calculated annually for people with type 2 diabetes. The required variables are:

  • Age
  • Ethnicity
  • Where ethnicity does not confer additional risk of CVD, family history must be known
  • The presence of diabetes
  • Smoking status
  • Total cholesterol: HDL ratio
  • Blood pressure
  • Personal History of CVD
  • Family History

Additional variables used in some risk calculators:

  • Duration of diabetes
  • HbA1c
  • Albuminuria
  • Anti-hypertensive medications

A CVD risk calculator for people with diabetes using these variables is available at the NZSSD website - CVD Risk Assessment For People With Diabetes
