Asthma Pathway - Management Plan

If Discharge home, following are points to consider:

1)   Clear Safety Plan

  • Patient understands when to present (ie action plan modified if necessary)
  • Patients have means to contact and to represent (ie Phone, transport)
  • Patients fully understand how to give medication


2)   Explanation of Treatment

  • Patient fully understands nature of medication and how to use
  • Explanation of time frame for Prednisone/Prednisolone to work (ie 4-6 hours)
  • Notify that if child vomits within 1 hour of giving Prednisolone/Prednisolone a repeat dose may be given)


3)   Consider cause of Asthma Attack & modify medication/environment if appropriate, i.e.

  • Flare of intermittent asthma - Consider why
  • Flare of persistent asthma - Consider why
  • Unrecognised Persistent asthma


4)   Consider when to Review

  • In PM for Am presentations
  • In 5 - 7 days post attack
