Stimulants

The following are potent cardiac stimulants that can provoke palpitations:

  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Energy drinks contain caffeine
  • Illicit substances - amphetamines, cocaine etc

Medications

Consider the following as possible causes of palpitations:

  • Tricyclics
  • Phenothiazines
  • Digoxin
  • Theophylline
  • Anti-arrhythmics

Other

Consider the following:

  • Thyrotoxicosis
  • Anaemia, blood loss
  • Fever,  infection
  • Electrolyte imbalance  - hypokalaemia, hypercalcaemia
  • Anxiety
